I would back congestion plan in Bexley
I have never "demanded" a congestion charge scheme in
Bexley ("Congestion charge outrage", September 8).
I wrote to Bexley council setting out a large number of
measures by Transport for London to improve traffic
conditions in the local area. In addition to these, I also
said that if Bexley felt a local congestion charging zone
would help address existing traffic problems, they would
have my support.
Bexley council needs to manage traffic flows in the
borough irrespective of the Thames Gateway Bridge. It has
stated that it does not intend to build any new roads or
widen existing roads, therefore good management of traffic
flows within the existing network is and will be required.
Taking into account all the measures to improve transport
in the Thames Gateway, public transport use is expected to
grow by 35 per cent by 2016 in the four local boroughs,
compared to a 10 per cent growth in car use.
The Thames Gateway Bridge will transform access to jobs
and housing for people in the south east of London. This
is why more than 80 per cent of local people support the
bridge.
