PROPOSED THAMES GATEWAY BRIDGE
OBJECTION LETTER RECEIVED 28 APRIL 2005 (DATED 4 APRIL 2005)
I have been studying transport matters in this area
for nearly sixty years. In recent years I have seen the tide turn against
cars and traffic in favour of pedestrians and public transport. There has
been the extension of the Docklands Light Railway to Lewisham and a station
opened south of the river at North Greenwich on the Jubilee Line. Shortly,
the Docklands Light Railway is to be extended to Woolwich and hopefully
Crossrail to Abbey Wood.
There is therefore no need for the proposed bridge.
It will only create more traffic and pollution and as can be seen from the
examples of river crossings at Dartford and Rochester it will do nothing to
relieve congestion.
Any money that would have been spent on the bridge
would be better employed in funding Crossrail and other Public Transport
improvements, which would in themselves, create the anticipated regeneration
of the Thames Gateway area.
