TGB Update Letter May 2006
After almost a year the Public Inquiry into the proposed Thames Gateway
Bridge closed on Wednesday 3 May 2006. The Inspector is due to forward
his recommendation to the Secretary of State for Transport by the end of
October 2006 and a final decision is expected in Spring 2007.
Transport for London’s (TfL) Barrister commended our contribution to
the Inquiry congratulating us on the way we had done it stating that we
had “made a dedicated and thorough attempt to understand and unravel the
issues”. Bexley Council remained objectors and stated in their closing
“The residents of Bexley (and others) who have attended the Inquiry have
been absolutely right to be concerned. As matters stand the Council
cannot support this bridge, for the reasons set out in its resolution.
Its concerns have not been met. In fact they have been increased.”
Our almost continuous presence at the Inquiry reminded the Inspector
and TfL that this bridge was about the lives of local people and that we
mattered. We would like to thank everyone who have supported us and feel
very positive that we and others have done everything possible to ensure
local people’s views will now seriously be taken into account.
Our involvement and that of others meant sacrifice, fatigue and
disruption of family life but it was worth it. I hope our efforts
inspire others to get involved in their local community and be more
aware of how precious our quality of life is and how important our
parks, gardens and open green spaces are now and for future generations.
Don’t assume that a planning application will automatically be
approved or is a “done deal”. Working together individuals and local
groups can be influential. Write letters, make telephone calls, contact
your local councillors and MP, join your local residents association,
send a petition, hold a deputation or ask questions at the quarterly
Full Council Meetings, speak at planning committee meetings and organise
your own public meeting if you feel strongly about an issue.
